Operations Engineer at Banyan Terminal, Vopak Terminal Singapore |
Upon graduating with a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering back in 1997, I ventured instinctively into the world of military R&D, where I worked as a research scientist for DSO National laboratories (the research arm for the Ministry of Defence of Singapore) on a 4-year stint. Then came a point where I decidedly transit to the frontline of military operations by enrolling myself as a full fledge Engineering Officer with the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). The transition from R&D to a position of military command has been refreshingly challenging but it fulfilled my personal intention for continual self-development. Understandably, I jumped onto the opportunity of post-graduate study when it presented before me in 2004. To this end, I am still immeasurably grateful to Vopak for sponsoring my Dual Masters Program, which is jointly administered by the National University of Singapore (Msc Logistics & Supply Chain) and the Georgia Technological Institute of America (Msc Industrial Engineering).
I had the privilege to commence my career with Vopak at the youngest and literally the most ‘happening’ terminal in Singapore, the Banyan Integrated Terminal. It was simply bustling with activities at the point when I joined the team. Phase 1’s development was already completed and was fully operational, while Phase 2’s construction was dutifully underway. It was at the same time, that Banyan conducted the kick-off meeting for its Phase 3 expansion and started concomitantly its Phase 4 preparations as well. It was certainly exciting to realize that all these efforts would in no time culminate into the materialization of Banyan in becoming one of the biggest integrated terminals in world. Even more exciting is the knowing that I will have an active role to play in this monumental transition.
The learning experiences and exposure opportunities have indeed been tremendous. This was particularly meaningful to me, being new to the oil and petrochemical business. I was also quick to be humbled by the level of technical competence, experience and dedication demonstrated by those I met on site. The most endearing aspect of working at this terminal, however, would be the openness and generosity of its people in the sharing of their expertise and knowledge. While being experts in their own rights, they are also pleasantly receptive to new ideas and radical ways of doing things as long as they are convinced that the fundamentals of each task are not compromised. Such a priceless attribute, don’t you think?
Needless to say, I am enjoying every moment at my current posting. There is still much to learn and I look forward to more exciting challenges ahead!
